The mystery of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Ghost (or Spirit as it is also known) has no corporeal reality. Its mystery is in the knowledge it conveys to the one experiencing it. Where that knowledge comes from no man on earth can say. It originates from the source of life in response to a spiritual need. How it is conveyed varies according to the needs of the one receiving it. It may come by messenger, by telepathic thought conveyance, by an observation, by a personal experience, or by some other unknown method.
How it comes is the mystery, for it leaves you in a state of wonder as to how the experience occurred. The messenger comes out of nowhere and is suddenly gone. The thought transcends your current understanding and yet you now know. The observation seems to defy logic. The personal experience seems to have been staged by some unseen director. You suddenly have your answer, but you have no understanding from whence it came.
I speak from personal experience or the experience of others that I’ve known or read about. The bible speaks of dreams and visions. Members of my family, me included, have had such dreams and visions. The book of acts tells of a day in which the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles as cloven tongues of fire and they began to speak in other tongues (Acts 2:1-4). This is not the standard way in which the Holy Spirit comes to you, it is an isolated case. Each case is different, but just as dramatic. It meets the needs of the situation at hand.
One thing the Holy Spirit reveals is that the cosmos is not deaf, dumb, and blind. It has a mind of its own and is capable of translating information to those who are worthy of its message. That is what the early Christians knew, and that is what all high-minded people know today. God didn’t just speak to ancient cultures. God continues to speak to those who have an ear to hear what the spirit has to say.
